PRIVATE NIGHTLIFE ARCHIVE
MR. BLACK ARCHIVE
NEW YORK 2006-2008
DOCUMENTED BY LUKE NERO
A time capsule from the final years before camera phones.
Mr. Black was New York’s last underground gay club before camera phones—a world that existed just before every night became content. Top hat, apron, arse out, and a digital camera in hand, I spent years documenting the characters, performers, icons, and beautiful weirdos who came through its doors, editing into the early hours so the night could see itself the next morning. What remains is an accidental archive of a fleeting moment in New York nightlife history. For the first time in 20 years, these photographs are being released in full.
